Former Indian MP Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, were shot dead on live TV in Prayagraj.

They were on their way to a medical checkup at a hospital in handcuffs, but stopped to speak to reporters. They were then shot by three gunmen posing as journalists.

Atiq had dozens of kidnapping, murder and extortion cases mounted against him in the past 20 years. The brothers were just sentenced to life in jail in March for kidnapping.A policeman and journalist were injured at the scene, and the gunmen turned themselves in immediately.

Moments before being shot, Atiq had been telling journalist about how he was unable to attend his son’s funeral.

His teenage son Asad was killed in a shootout with police, and was the main suspect in the murder of Umesh Pal in February 2023.

Umesh Pal had been the key witness in the 2005 murder of Raju Pal, a BSP politician who defeated Ashraf in the 2004 assembly elections in Atiq’s stronghold.Atiq was a part of the Samajwadi Party, and became an MP in 2004 when he won a seat in the federal polls.

According to the BBC, Prayagraj city is currently in a lockdown state, and a judicial probe has been ordered into the killings.Large gatherings in Uttar Pradesh have also been banned.
