Italy’s most wanted mafia boss, Matteo Messina Denaro, has been arrested by police after 30 years on the run.

Italian media reported that he was receiving treatment when Italian paramilitary carbine police arrested him just before 10:00 am. (09:00 GMT) and took him to an unknown location.

More than 100 members of the armed forces are said to have taken part in the arrest.

Messina Denaro was tried in 1992 for multiple murders and sentenced to life in absentia. Among the murders he carried out were the assassinations of anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in 1992, the fatal bombings of Milan, Florence and Rome in 1993, and the kidnapping of an 11-year-old mafia son. , torture, and murder. He became a State Witness.

A video circulated by Italian media appears to show people standing in the street and applauding the Italian police as Messina Denaro was being led away.
