Public outrage has erupted in Delta State following the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man by a police officer while the suspect was restrained and unarmed.

The incident occurred on April 26, 2026, in the Effurun area near the Warri-Sapele Expressway. The victim, identified as Mene Ogidi, was seen in a widely circulated video on the ground with his hands tied behind his back. In the footage, Ogidi was heard pleading for his life, telling the officers he had been deceived by a friend and offering to lead them to someone in Sapele.

According to eyewitness accounts and the video, an officer identified as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, who was leading the team, discharged his firearm at close range, killing the suspect on the spot.

The shooting has sparked widespread condemnation on social media, with many Nigerians describing it as an extrajudicial execution.

Police Reaction

The Delta State Police Command and the Nigeria Police Force have strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a clear violation of the Force Order on the use of firearms and standard operating procedures.

The police stated that efforts were being made to take the suspect into lawful custody when the officer fired the fatal shot, contrary to established regulations. ASP Nuhu Usman has since been arrested and transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action and possible prosecution.The Force Public Relations Officer confirmed that the suspect was unarmed at the time of the shooting and that the officer’s action was unjustified.
