A shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night triggered moments of chaos as U.S. President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and senior administration officials were rushed out of the Washington Hilton by Secret Service agents.

The incident occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m., when gunfire was heard near the main security screening area outside the ballroom.

According to law enforcement officials, the suspect—identified as 31‑year‑old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California—attempted to charge through a Secret Service checkpoint while armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.

Agents intercepted him almost immediately. During the confrontation, a Secret Service officer was struck by a round but avoided serious injury thanks to a bulletproof vest. No other attendees were harmed.

Witnesses inside the ballroom described a sudden eruption of confusion as agents shouted for guests to take cover. Hundreds of journalists, government officials, and invited guests crouched beneath tables while security teams secured the area. Within seconds, the president and top officials were escorted out of the room.

Authorities say Allen appeared to be acting alone. Early statements from investigators indicate he told officers after his arrest that he intended to target officials within the Trump administration, though he did not specify the president himself. He was taken into custody at the scene and later transported to a hospital for evaluation.

The annual black‑tie dinner, which was set to be President Trump’s first as a sitting president, was immediately canceled. The president later returned to the White House, where he held a late‑night press conference praising the rapid response of the Secret Service and law enforcement. He described the suspect as a “lone wolf” and confirmed that the event would be rescheduled within the next month.

Officials from the Metropolitan Police Department and federal agencies have launched a joint investigation. The suspect faces multiple charges, including assault on a federal officer and firearms violations. A large security perimeter was established around the hotel as forensic teams processed the scene.

The shooting has renewed concerns about security at high‑profile political events, particularly those involving large crowds and open press access. Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that the protective measures in place worked as intended, preventing what could have been a far more serious attack.

As of early Sunday morning, the injured Secret Service agent is reported to be in stable condition, and authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the public.
