Three people have been killed and another 80 are injured after Army leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan declared emergency rule over the transitional government, according to Reuters.
On Monday, acting Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and his wife, Muna Abdallah, were placed under house arrest and later “kidnapped” at dawn from their Khartoum residence, ABC News reports.
The arrests come after a failed coup attempt in September and weeks of rising tensions between Sudan’s civilian and military leaders.
“Thousands took to the streets of Sudan to protest the arrest of civilian leaders as Sudan’s top general has declared a state of emergency as soldiers rounded up civilian leaders, with three people killed as soldiers put down protests decrying a coup.
Meanwhile the U.S. has frozen aid to Sudan’s government in response to the coup, and demanded the immediate restoration of the transitional government.
The White House says it is “deeply alarmed” by reports Sudan’s military seized power Monday after troops arrested the prime minister and other officials.
