ECOWAS has ordered a standby force to restore constitutional order in Niger Republic.

Omar Alieu Touray made the remark on thursday at the ECOWAS extraordinary meeting in Abuja.

The body also urged the African Union, AU, partner countries, and institutions to support the ECOWAS resolution (to restore constitutional order in Niger by force).

ECOWAS stated that all attempts at discussion with the Niger Republic’s military junta have been “defiantly rejected by the coup leaders,” and that they condemn the continued detention of Niger’s ousted former president, Mohamed Bazoum, and his family members.

The ECOWAS decision states in part, “Direct the committee of the Chief of Defense Staff to activate the ECOWAS Stan-by force with all its elements immediately.”

Order the deployment of an ECOWAS stand-by force to restore constitutional order in Niger.”
