Despite Lauren James’ red card, England survived 120 minutes of Nigeria domination to reach the World Cup quarter-finals, winning 4-2 on penalties following a goalless draw at fulltime and extra time.
The game got much worse for England when James (87) was sent off late in normal time for a frustrated and avoidable stamp on Michelle Alozie’s back.
England, however, rode the surge of Nigerian pressure to push the game to penalties. The shootout began with a miss by Georgia Stanway, but two more misses by the Super Falcons gave the Lionesses control.
