A former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (rtd), has urged the military authorities to expedite the counter-insurgency operations to end the war in the Lake Chad Basin Region.

Buratai spoke at the 1st International Conference organized by the Department of History and Strategic Studies at the University of Maiduguri yesterday.

He commended the military for their sacrifices and efforts against outlawed groups, stressing that the war should not be prolonged like the conflicts in Colombia and Sri Lanka.

He highlighted the fundamental role of military operations, which involve a combination of military intelligence, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Police, and collaboration with local authorities in addressing the security challenges in the region.

“We believe the war should end in a very short time and shouldn’t prolong like those in countries of Columbia and Sri Lanka,” he said.

The former army chief said troops under his leadership reclaimed nine local government areas in Borno within five months.

The vice chancellor of the university, Prof Aliyu Shugaba, said the University of Maiduguri was resilient and resisted all attempts and pressures to shut down despite four successive attacks by suicide bombers on the campus.
