Tension gripped the University of Jos community yesterday after reports emerged that a student was abducted along the Jos-Kaduna highway, a route notorious for insecurity in recent years.
According to classmates, the victim was traveling home when armed men intercepted the vehicle. Hours later, a disturbing video showing the student being tortured was circulated in the class WhatsApp group, sending shockwaves through the university community.

Eyewitnesses said the kidnappers blocked the highway with makeshift barricades before forcing passengers into the bush. The abductors later contacted the student’s family and colleagues, demanding ransom. University officials condemned the incident, describing it as “a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers faced by students and travelers on Nigerian highways.” Security agencies have reportedly launched a search operation, though details remain scarce.
The Jos-Kaduna highway has long been plagued by kidnappings and bandit attacks, with travelers often at risk despite repeated government assurances of improved security. Students and parents are now calling for urgent intervention to protect commuters and ensure the safe release of the abducted student.
As of press time, the victim’s identity has not been officially disclosed, but classmates confirmed the individual is a final-year student. The circulation of the torture video has heightened anxiety, with many students expressing fear about traveling during the ongoing academic session.
