Nigerian Police Arrests, Repatriates $245m Ponzi Scheme Suspect to China

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested and repatriated a Chinese national, Xu Qing, who is wanted in China for allegedly orchestrating a massive Ponzi scheme valued at more than $245 million.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the operation was carried out by the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja following a formal request from Chinese authorities. Xu Qing had been declared wanted in Beijing for allegedly running an illegal public deposit scheme that defrauded thousands of victims.

Investigations revealed that the suspect fled China to Nigeria on 5 November 2024 to evade arrest. A warrant was subsequently issued for him on 12 November 2025 by the Shinan Sub‑Bureau of Qingdao Public Security.

Acting on intelligence, INTERPOL operatives tracked Xu to a factory in Olowotedo, Siun Village, located in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State. He was arrested on 24 April 2026 after a period of surveillance. Four days later, on 28 April 2026, he was repatriated to China under a bilateral police cooperation arrangement.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to combating transnational crime and strengthening international law‑enforcement collaboration. He also urged Nigerian employers to conduct proper background checks—especially when hiring foreign nationals—to avoid unknowingly harbouring fugitives.

The Police emphasized that Nigeria will not serve as a safe haven for international criminals.
