A video capturing a Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) official soliciting a ₦5,000 bribe from a passenger at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos has prompted a preliminary investigation by the NCS.
The Customs spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada, confirmed this in a statement, saying such behavior has rightfully raised public concern.
He stated that a preliminary investigation revealed that the incident transpired at New Terminal, within the departure hall of MMIA, Lagos, and was captured on video by the involved passenger.
“We wish to confirm that the officer implicated is indeed a member of the Nigeria Customs Service, properly assigned to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Area Command.
“The recording revealed an inappropriate request for ₦5000 in exchange for expeditious processing of customs procedures,” Maiwada said.
Maiwada said that the NCS is committed to ensuring full accountability.
Condemning the unprofessional conduct, Maiwada assured the public that a comprehensive investigation is underway. He emphasized that the NCS is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and transparency.
He added by encouraging passengers and the public to report any instances of misconduct or corruption which goes against the ethics of the NCS promptly.
These reports, he said, are crucial in upholding the integrity of the services of Customs and ensuring that officers adhere to the highest ethical standards.
The Customs spokesperson stated that the NCS is unwavering in its commitment to fostering a culture of transparency and accountability.
“The outcome of the investigation will be communicated to the public at the earliest opportunity,” Maiwada said.
