Goncalo Ramos replaced Cristiano Ronaldo and scored a hat-trick as Portugal stormed into the World Cup quarter-finals with a 6-1 win over Switzerland on Tuesday.
Ramos, making his first international start at the age of 21, opened the scoring at the Lusail Stadium with a rocket past goalkeeper Yann Sommer before veteran defender Pepe (39) became the oldest goalscorer in a World Cup knockout game .
Ramos struck again to start the second when he got on the head of defender Diogo Dalot’s low cross and tapped between Sommer’s legs.
Raphael Guerreiro made it four when he finished off a well-executed team move with a powerful strike.
Switzerland pulled one back in the 58th minute when Manuel Akanji found space at the back post to comfortably nod home, but there was no going back as Ramos hit the third with a smart chip over the on rushing Sommer to become the youngest player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup knockout game since Brazilian legend Pele in 1958.
