Arsenal lost 3-5 on penalty shoot-out against Sporting Lisbon at the end of their epic Europa League last 16 tie at Emirates stadium.
Gabriel Martinelli’s shot was blocked to send the Portuguese side through to the quarter-finals as the sides drew 1-1 fulltime on the night.
Arsenal expected to go relatively comfortably when Granit Xhaka parried Martinelli’s first-half strike, but the Gunners didn’t fire at all in the second half and Pedro Goncalves’ outrageous strike from the middle caught them out in spectacular style with Aaron Ramsdale scrambling back into his own goal mouth in vein.
