The incident, described by the airline as an in-flight engine anomaly, prompted a precautionary engine shutdown and diversion to the nearest suitable airport as per standard safety protocols.

All 80 passengers and crew members disembarked normally upon landing, with no injuries reported.The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed the event and launched a formal investigation into the cause of the engine issue. Initial assessments indicate substantial damage to the affected engine, including a missing inlet and severely torn cowlings, consistent with an uncontained engine failure.

Photos and videos circulating online show the extent of the damage to the left engine nacelle following the safe landing.Arik Air’s spokesperson, Adebanji Ola, stated that the crew acted swiftly and professionally, ensuring the safety of everyone on board.

Some passengers were heard praying fervently amid the tense moments, as captured in videos shared on social media, highlighting the anxiety during the diversion. The airline has arranged alternative transportation for the affected passengers to reach Port Harcourt.
