Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League with a 6-2 loss to Real Madrid as Karim Benzema’s late strike set up a 1-0 defeat for the Reds in the second leg.
Holding a huge three-goal lead from the first leg, the home side started the game the stronger, with both Vinicius Junior and Eduardo Camavinga forcing Alisson into some excellent saves early on.
Darwin Nunez went close in an entertaining first half for Jurgen Klopp’s side, twice denied by Thibaut Courtois, but Liverpool were indebted to their goalkeeper Alisson, who kept Madrid at bay with several saves in front of his goal.
The bizarre removal of their most threatening attacking outlet, Darwin Nunez, didn’t help either, and Klopp’s side struggled to break down an organised and competent Real Madrid side.
As their hopes continued to fade, they were dealt a killer blow as Karim Benzema tapped in to take Real Madrid four goals clear, and left the game petering out.
