The suspended President of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, has resigned three weeks after kissing a player on the lips after Spain defeated England to win their first-ever Women’s World Cup title in Sydney, Australia.
Rubiales stated in a message posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Sunday that he cannot return to his position following his suspension by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).
After my swift suspension by FIFA, and the rest of the cases building against me, it is clear that I cannot return to the post,” Rubiales said.
FIFA had previously temporarily suspended him from his position due to his behavior during the final.
Rubiales stated that he had informed interim Spanish federation president Pedro Rocha of his resignation.Rubiales will also leave his role as vice president of UEFA, the European football regulatory body, which earns him 250,000 euros ($268,000) each year.
Jenni Hermoso, the Spanish female footballer involved, had filed a criminal complaint against Rubiales following the kissing incident.
Hermoso testified on Tuesday, putting Rubiales in danger of facing criminal charges for what occurred between him and Hermoso.
