The National Universities Commission (NUC) has shut down 58 unauthorized universities or satellite campuses in Nigeria, declaring that certificates from these institutions will not be accepted for mandatory national service, employment, or advanced studies.
Acting Executive Secretary Chris Maiyaki informed Channels Television in Abuja on Wednesday that arrests have been made in connection with these illicit institutions. He highlighted the involvement of the Department of State Services (DSS) in dismantling these unauthorized institutions and apprehending those responsible.
This revelation follows the suspension of degree certificates from two West African countries and other nations, triggered by an undercover journalist’s exposé on obtaining a degree from a university in Benin Republic within two months and being enlisted in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
In an official announcement, NUC disclosed the closure of these fraudulent institutions, with nine other labeled as “Degree Mills” under investigation or facing ongoing court proceedings.
Maiyaki stressed that these actions aim to prosecute proprietors and recover illegal fees charged to unsuspecting individuals. He issued a stern warning, stating that individuals obtaining certificates from these illegal sources do so at their own risk, as such certificates will not be recognized for NYSC, employment, or further studies.
