A British father who disappeared during a solo retirement holiday in Thailand last week has been found.

David Goldthorpe, 65, from Edinburgh, was expected to return home on Sunday after more than three weeks travelling alone in the southeast Asian nation, until police revealed he had never boarded his flight from Phuket to Doha.

Relatives described receiving ‘some odd messages and then silence’ before David vanished in appeals for information on Facebook.

They say David had flown out on April 12 and stayed at a hotel in Bangkok for a week before travelling to a popular resort in the country. He had not been in touch since last Wednesday, around 3.30am.

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office told MailOnline this afternoon that they were supporting a British national in Thailand and were in contact with the family, without providing further details.

Prior to the discovery, the family had shared concerns about the disappearance in pleas for information shared on Facebook.

‘After some odd messages and then silence, we haven’t heard from our uncle for five days,’ one relative posted on Facebook.

‘He has been on holiday in Thailand but police confirmed he never made his flight home. Please share as we are incredibly worried about him.’

The family continued to support police efforts to find David, sharing his photo in Thailand-based expat groups.

Kate described her father-in-law as 5ft 8′ tall, aged 65-years-old.

‘He is single and had recently retired so just wanted a holiday,’ she said.

‘He was booked on a flight to Doha on Sunday morning but police confirmed he was unfortunately not on that.’

David was expected to catch a connecting flight from Doha to Edinburgh on May 5 before the disappearance.
