The International Court of Justice is expected to rule on South Africa’s provisional requests regarding the case accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza. The ruling will not determine whether Israel has committed genocide; that decision is anticipated to take years.
Instead, the court will focus on South Africa’s nine provisional requests, including halting Israel’s military operations in Gaza and ensuring unhindered humanitarian access.
The ruling is scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m. at the Peace Palace in The Hague. South Africa initiated proceedings against Israel on December 29, 2023, alleging violations of obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide concerning Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
The accusations stem from Israel’s actions following the October 7 attack by Hamas militants. Both countries presented their arguments at the ICJ on January 10 and 11, with South Africa contending that Israel is intentionally targeting entire families in Gaza.
