Former US President Donald Trump will surrender to Georgia authorities on Thursday, accused of illegally plotting to overturn the state’s 2020 election defects.
It will be Trump’s fourth arrest since April, when he was indicted as the first former president in US history. Since then, Trump, who is still the Republican presidential nominee, has encountered a slew of legal problems in states around the country.
“Can you believe it? I’ll be going to Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday to be arrested,” Trump wrote on his social media network on Monday night, hours after his bond was set at $200,000 (£156,000).
Trump’s visit to Georgia will take place the day after the first Republican primary debate, which he has decided to forego.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis set a Friday noon deadline for Trump and his 18 co-defendants to bring themselves in and be booked. Defendants are often photographed, fingerprinted, and asked to furnish information during the booking procedure.
She has stated that she intends to try the defendants collectively and to bring the matter to trial in March of next year, in the midst of the presidential nomination season.
