Following her resignation after an inquiry into alleged corruption during her tenure as defence minister, former National Assembly speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula was charged with corruption and money laundering by South African prosecutors on Thursday.
She was promptly granted bail in Pretoria after the charges were announced and has maintained her innocence.
Last month, investigators raided her residence as part of the inquiry, leading to her resignation as a member of parliament the day before.
