Spain won the Women’s World Cup for the first time on Sunday, defeating England 1-0. Captain Olga Carmona scored in the 29th minute, drilling in from the left side of the box after England lost possession in midfield and Spain reacted fast to take the lead in the match at Stadium Australia.
Shortly after the hour mark, Spain was given a penalty for a handball by midfielder Keira Walsh. Goalkeeper Mary Earps, on the other hand, saved Jennifer Hermoso’s penalty kick by diving to her left.
Sarina Wiegman, England’s coach, made many changes, including bringing on attacker Lauren James, but they were unable to produce an equalizer as Spain won their first major title.
