Czech restaurant fire claims six lives, injures eight

A restaurant fire in a northwestern city in the Czech Republic has claimed six lives and left eight others injured, rescue services reported on Sunday.

“The fire spread extremely fast after a gas heater was probably knocked over,” the local fire service posted on X.

The fire broke out in a restaurant located within a housing estate in the city of Most, approximately 70 kilometres (45 miles) northwest of the capital, Prague.

It began at 22:17 GMT on Saturday and was brought under control by midnight, according to the fire service.

“Despite all efforts… the fire had tragic consequences for six people,” the statement added.

Eight people sustained injuries, six of whom are in serious condition. They were transported to hospitals in Prague, Most and the regional capital, Usti nad Labem.

Interior Minister Vít Rakušan stated on X that firefighters had evacuated about 30 people from the restaurant and an adjacent block of flats.
