Manchester City battled to reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after beating Liverpool 3-2 in a thriller encounter at the Etihad on Thursday night.
Striker Erling Haaland picked up where he left off before the World Cup break when he latched onto Kevin De Bruyne’s cross and into the net to give his side an early lead in the 10th minute.
Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho equalized in the 20th minute after a James Milner pass past City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.
Minutes after half-time, City regained the lead as Riyad Mahrez’s perfect shot hit the bottom corner of the goal.
Their lead did not last long as Liverpool marched straight back in the other direction less than a minute later when striker Mohamed Salah leveled his side again at 2-2.
The drama continued after a short City corner as De Bruyne flicked the ball into the box as defender Nathan Ake rose from behind to head past goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
Despite efforts from Salah and Nunez, Liverpool were unable to equalize for the third time as City booked their place in the quarter-finals.
