Nine victims of the mining pit collapse in Galadima-Kogo, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State have been buried.

The six Muslim victims were laid to rest at the Unguwan Daji Muslim cemetery following funeral prayers at the palace of the Emir of Minna on Wednesday evening, while the three Christian victims were buried at Christian cemeteries in Minna, the state capital.

An elder brother to one of the victims, Suleiman Isah, who could not attend due to ill health, described the moment as grievous for the families.

The chairman of Shiroro Local Government Area, Akilu Ishaku Kuta, called on the state and federal governments to ensure that all mining companies operating in the local government obtain the necessary permits and implement precautionary measures.

Daily Trust previously reported the collapse of a mining site managed by African Minerals and Logistics Limited in early June, which trapped many of the company’s workers. The chairman noted that some victims remained trapped in the pit.
