A filling station around Rumuolumeni/ Iwofe road in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, caught fire this morning.
An eyewitness told our correspondent that the fire started at about 6am today after an explosion was heard from that area.
The eyewitness said a tanker offloading petrol in the filling station spilt its content.
Put correspondent who visited the area reports that although there were no casualties, at least three petrol dispensing machines and two tankers were destroyed by the fire. The flames from the filling station also destroyed some buildings around the area.
As at the time of reporting the incident, men of the State Fire Service were not yet on-site to quench the fire. Meanwhile, the Rivers State Commissioner for Special Duties, Bariere Thomas, says he almost lost two firemen after hoodlums attacked the fire trucks sent to put out the fire at the fuel station in Iwofe. Dr Bariere told our correspondent that the hoodlums wanted to seize the opportunity under the guise of helping to put off the fire, to loot items from the fuel station. He, however, said they are mobilizing security personnel and their fire trucks back to the scene of the fire.
